History of music videos

There are many different ways that a person can view a artist's music video, such as;
  • On a music channel on the TV, i.e. MTV, The Box & 4Music.
  • On a online video sharing website, i.e. YouTube, Dailymotion & Vimeo.
  • Using a music streaming service, i.e. Spotify, Deezer & Pandora.
  • Listening to the song on a FM radio channel, i.e. KISS 100, Capital FM & BBC Radio One.
The way in which people are able to view and consume a music video and it's audio has changed throughout the years due to the growth in technology. This has meant that more people have been able to view music videos, which means that the audience has growth and become bigger.

The music video industry has changed a lot since the first attempt to make a music video happened.

In 1894 Joe Stern & Edward B. Marks was a piece of sheet music that they had written. They hired George Thomas to help promote it and he used a magic lantern to show a series of images that would be conveying a live performance to the viewer. This was the first ever stage of the making of the music video and it was known as a illustrated song.

Soundies were the second step in the development of the music video and these were created around 1940 - 1946 and these were basically 3 minute videos which included dance sequences and they were normally musical films. They would be displayed on a Panoram, which was a jukebox that would display the video and the soundies would have to be printed backwards as the Panoram would mirror the image so that it would be viewed in the correct orientation.

Musical films helped to develop music videos as many music videos used musicals as inspiration for their

My Magazine Advert Reflection

When doing research, I searched in many different magazine's that are aimed at different ages and genders to help me develop my understanding of what our target audience would expect to see in a magazine advert for a music artist and their music.
From my research, I learnt more about the layout, which indicated that having an image of the artist as the main focus was essential. Another convention was that the language shouldn't be too complex and there shouldn't be a lot of writing as this will cause people to get bored and they may not absorb the message and objective of sales of the new music.

what are your ideas and inspirations behind your paper design?

Magazine Advert 1:
I like the image that I used in this picture, as she is looking straight at the camera and this will cause the audience to do the same thing to her.
I like that the pink in the background, as it matches the pink Marni writing and the white box behind the Marni writing will make the viewer look at the text at the top of the advert.

Magazine Advert 2:
I think layout and language wise, this version is better.
It has more information about the product it is trying to sell, which is the artist and their debut album.  I think that the gradient on the background is a lot more subtle, which makes it look more professional.
However, one thing I would change is the colour of the background as I do not believe it is the most conventional colour to use and a pink or purple background might have looked better.

My Digipak Reflection

Before creating my own digipak version, I decided to do some research to see what the conventional digipak for a female pop artist would be.
I looked at Katy Perry's digipak for inspiration and learnt a lot about what a stereotypical pop artist will feature on their digipak

My Digipak:

This was the digipak that I created by myself and me & my fellow group members decided that it would be best to all come up with our own digipak's so that we could then look over them all and see what would be best and how we could bring all our skills together to create our final digipak.

I decided to use purple as my main colour on the digipak, as it was one of the main colours on our colour scheme for the music video and I felt that it was a conventional pop artist colour.
I like the idea for the welcome note. I wrote the welcome note out then added a clipping tool to it, to attach the gold image that I found online and this make it seem more rich. However, looking back, I should have gone for a different shade of gold, as it is very difficult to read from far away.

Digipak Analysis

During the research stage of this project, I researched into different pop artists & their ancillary products. I chose Katy Perry as she is a stereotypical pop artist who is starting to become famous enough to be able to do what she want instead of what her record label would want. She would now get a say.

Representation
The artist is represented in a childish yet sexual way. The digipak has a theme of a cotton candy land which would show that she is innocent and child like, having a music digipak based on a child's fantasy. However, on the front cover and on one of the images of herself, she is shown to be lying down naked, being covered up with either a hand or some well placed candy floss. This shows that whilst she is being represented as having a child's fantasy, she is contradicting herself by making herself look like a adult's fantasy.
She has probably done this to increase her potential target audience, as a male would be more likely to buy it due to the image of her naked and the way her body is being represented.

Connotations
The digipak theme connotes that the songs are sweet and would be age appropriate but from the pictures of Katy, you can see that it is aimed for adults. Also, on the front cover, there is a sticker that says the album has moderate language in it, which again goes against the theme.
The digipak is quite unique as not many artists would try to do such a bold statement in the pop genre. Her cd's are a doughnut and a lollipop, which implies that the album is sweet, which contradicts itself once again.

Colours
The main colours on Katy's digipak is pink which is shown on the candy floss, red which is shown on the font on the background and on the lollipop cd. Blue is a secondary colour, which is shown on the doughnut cd, the sky on the front and back cover & on the font on the back cover.
The pink, red & white are conventional for a female pop artist to have as these are colours that the target audience will like and these will help to help the target audience to want to buy the album.

Layout
In this digipak, there is three pictures of Katy Perry. There is one on the front cover where she is lying down and she takes up most of the middle space, with the candy floss filling the rest of the empty space. There is a close up shot of her where she fills up the entire space of the digipak slide. The third image is of the artist in the middle of a cup cake and a fountain and she is leaning on both whilst sitting down. This image goes over 3 digipak slides and this shows that the layout is made so that the digipak must be laid out and looked at.

Font

The font on the back cover is very curvy with curved corners and a thick inside in the writing. The O's have been changed from the normal O in that font, to a lollipop candy swirl o, which keeps with the digipak theme.
A red is used for the main songs that are listed on the album, with the songs in the blue font being remixes that are on the second cd, which is a bonus cd called Dream On.

The artist's name is done in a font that joins up throughout the whole word. It looks like a ballon and shows that this digipak has a child like theme behind it. This is also very conventional for a pop artist, as this is the kind of font that Katy's target audience of young females would like and think looks good.

Target Audience
The artist's target audience is shown to be young and carefree as if they were to like and buy this album then it shows that they like the candy land theme and they must be a fan of hers.
Due to the way that the artist is shown on the cover, we can see that the target audience would be expanded and she would increase her sales as males would buy the album. Plus there is a collobration with Snoop Dogg on the album, which could interest the Hip-Hop and R'n'B audience & Snoop Dogg's fans too.

Music Genre
This digipak shows the pop genre to be fun and light, with the candy land theme showing that the genre is less about money and expensive things, like Hip-Hop is and it is more about fantasies and something dream like.
Also, with the main colour being pink, that connotes that the target audience for this genre would be mainly females.

Choosing artist names

As a group we found the task of choosing on an artist name especially difficult. This was due to the fact that we were all aware of the importance that an artist name holds as many famous pop artist have changed their names in order to me both easily memorable and spoken by fans no matter their mother tongue but at the same time be unique and stand out from the crowd. Examples of artist who have had to change their names include; Lady Gaga whose actual name is Stephanie and JessieJ whose actual name is Jessica Cornish.

In the pursuit of an artist’s name we begun brainstorming a variety of different unique yet easily memorable name, below are a list of names that we found:
  • Elliya
  • Leyla
  • Delila
  • Sophia
  • Adrianna
  • Alexia
  • Anya
  • Marissa
  • Valentina
  • Adena
  • Penelope
  • Valerie
  • Eva
  • Clara
  • Esme
  • Marni
  • Alana
  • Rochelle
  •  Zara
  • Aleesha
  • Analise
  •  Carmel
  • Avery
  •  Chloe
  • Ashleigh
  • Gabrielle
  •  Teigan
  • Camryn

From this list we then begun ruling out the names that we did not think suitable for a pop artist. This helped us in narrowing down the large variety of name ideas that we had found.
After a number of discussions we finally came to the joint decision that our artist name would be Marni.

There are a number of reason for which we chose this name.
The first is that this name is unique not one of the three of us could think of anyone who known or had heard of having the name.
Furthermore we felt that whilst it being unique from other names it was also easy to pronounce and this is a key issue that any artist needs to consider if they want to achieve global success.
Finally, we believed that this name is one that will prove memorable for our target audience.

Choosing record label name

A further important decision that we needed to make as a group was that we needed to choose a record label name.
To do this we decided to first of all research existing record label names and from this research we would then try and from this research find other names of records labels which we could create to use in our own work.
The record label name that we have chosen to use is Empire record labels.
The reason for which we choose this specific record label name was that we felt that it conveyed power and wealth whilst also appearing as a international company, therefore as a group came to the joint decision that we would use Empire Records as our record label name.

Magazine Advert Analysis

Leona Lewis – Spirit Advert

Representation:
In this advert, the artist is represented to be soft and beautiful and this is shown through her hair and make-up. She has make-up that highlights her glowing skin and her eye shadow highlights her green eyes. Her curly hair is done in a way that looks soft and makes her whole face look soft.

Connotations:

Colours:
The colours that are used on this advert are bronzes and gold colours. This shows that she is successful and the colour bronze connotes wealth and power. This shows to the viewer that her career will be the same and as Spirit was the first released album with her own original songs.

Layout:
The layout of this advert is a very simplistic one. There is the artists name at the top, with an image of Leona in the middle with the album name below her face. Then there is a section at the bottom, which says that, the “album is out” and “that the wait is over”.

Image:
Leona’s image in this advert is one that shows off her natural self, which will help the audience to relate back to her, as she was a normal ordinary person before she applied for The X Factor and got a record label. Also, it will cause people for the person she was beforehand and this could make people like her more as they will see her as more humble due to her natural face and her not having had a massive make over to look more like a pop star.

Typography:
The font used in this advert has been used to stand out and this is due to the contrast of the font against the image of the artist. Leona is shown to be soft and airy whilst the font is quite a sharp straight lined one, which is completely different to the softness, which is conveyed in her image.

Style of language:
The style of language on the advert is very basic so that everyone would be able to understand the album advert and this would been the advert would be more widespread.

Risk Assessment

We decided as a group that we should work out what risks that may be in the filming.
We knew that this would help us in the production stage as we would be more organised and would be able to prepare for the filming more efficient.

Here is the table that we produced for the risk assessment:
A risk assessment is essential to filming as without it, people could get hurt or equipment could get damaged and this would slow down filming and would get people injured. If this was a professional filming and a risk assessment wasn't done, the filming could get shut down and if a incident, there could be legal action towards the film production.
