During the research stage of this project, I researched into different pop artists & their ancillary products. I chose Katy Perry as she is a stereotypical pop artist who is starting to become famous enough to be able to do what she want instead of what her record label would want. She would now get a say.
Representation
The artist is represented in a childish yet sexual way. The digipak has a theme of a cotton candy land which would show that she is innocent and child like, having a music digipak based on a child's fantasy. However, on the front cover and on one of the images of herself, she is shown to be lying down naked, being covered up with either a hand or some well placed candy floss. This shows that whilst she is being represented as having a child's fantasy, she is contradicting herself by making herself look like a adult's fantasy.
She has probably done this to increase her potential target audience, as a male would be more likely to buy it due to the image of her naked and the way her body is being represented.

Connotations
The digipak theme connotes that the songs are sweet and would be age appropriate but from the pictures of Katy, you can see that it is aimed for adults. Also, on the front cover, there is a sticker that says the album has moderate language in it, which again goes against the theme.

The digipak is quite unique as not many artists would try to do such a bold statement in the pop genre. Her cd's are a doughnut and a lollipop, which implies that the album is sweet, which contradicts itself once again.
Colours
The main colours on Katy's digipak is pink which is shown on the candy floss, red which is shown on the font on the background and on the lollipop cd. Blue is a secondary colour, which is shown on the doughnut cd, the sky on the front and back cover & on the font on the back cover.

The pink, red & white are conventional for a female pop artist to have as these are colours that the target audience will like and these will help to help the target audience to want to buy the album.
Layout
In this digipak, there is three pictures of Katy Perry. There is one on the front cover where she is lying down and she takes up most of the middle space, with the candy floss filling the rest of the empty space. There is a close up shot of her where she fills up the entire space of the digipak slide. The third image is of the artist in the middle of a cup cake and a fountain and she is leaning on both whilst sitting down. This image goes over 3 digipak slides and this shows that the layout is made so that the digipak must be laid out and looked at.
The font on the back cover is very curvy with curved corners and a thick inside in the writing. The O's have been changed from the normal O in that font, to a lollipop candy swirl o, which keeps with the digipak theme.
A red is used for the main songs that are listed on the album, with the songs in the blue font being remixes that are on the second cd, which is a bonus cd called Dream On.
Target Audience

The artist's name is done in a font that joins up throughout the whole word. It looks like a ballon and shows that this digipak has a child like theme behind it. This is also very conventional for a pop artist, as this is the kind of font that Katy's target audience of young females would like and think looks good.
The artist's target audience is shown to be young and carefree as if they were to like and buy this album then it shows that they like the candy land theme and they must be a fan of hers.
Due to the way that the artist is shown on the cover, we can see that the target audience would be expanded and she would increase her sales as males would buy the album. Plus there is a collobration with Snoop Dogg on the album, which could interest the Hip-Hop and R'n'B audience & Snoop Dogg's fans too.

Music Genre
This digipak shows the pop genre to be fun and light, with the candy land theme showing that the genre is less about money and expensive things, like Hip-Hop is and it is more about fantasies and something dream like.
Also, with the main colour being pink, that connotes that the target audience for this genre would be mainly females.

This post demonstrates a basic undrstanding of the conventions that are used in the digipak. You have made a start in identifying the pain points, but you have not referred back to the codes and conventions of pop, or how the artist can build a relationship with the audience.
ReplyDeleteYou also need to include a summary to explain how your research will assist you with planning your own digipak.
